Yes, but I see it from time to time that people who wants to be on bleeding edge and don't have too much insight on what it takes to run a stable system choosing such a distro. I would also say that it's only slightly worse than running it on the latest Fedora or Gentoo which also tends to get new releases of packages a bit early. Lars |

bytehd wrote: > do i really need to? > it seems to be working ok Do you really need to do what exactly? You asked if it is possible to downgrade debian, it is, sort of. Whether you have a need to do it is up to you. If you are patient, you could make sure that in /etc/apt/sources.list the distribution has the actual name and NOT stable, unstable or so. I forgot what the current name of testing or unstable is. Then once the new stable comes out you automagically have a stable debian system with the upgrade. ASSP of course does not need to be changed at all, since it uses perl, an interpreted language. Greetings, Jeroen |

Check http://people.debian.org/~osamu/downgrade.html for example. Alternatively you could copy stuff you need, such as /etc /home /opt to a safe place. Reinstall debian, but now stable, and recreate your configuration from the copied /etc. Copy back the rest (not /etc) such as custom stuff in /opt back and it may just automagically run. Of course in any case if you have compiled stuff yourself it may break since it may have been linked to higher version libraries than what you have with the downgraded system. Greetings, Jeroen |

The problem with testing is it doesn't get updates as fast as unstable. So if something breaks it can take weeks for a fix to trickle down from unstable. So if you want bleeding edge unstable seems a better bet. Obviously for stability, which servers needs, stable (the word says it all) is the way to go. Regards, Jeroen |

> I'm surprised they pushed out 5.10 like that considering the number of > modules still unsupported. Keep in mind that this is *not* happening on the stable version of debian (4.0 codename etch). Perl 5.10 has been accepted in the unstable version Sid where packages can be upgraded without much notice and break other things. Sid is debians first testing ground before it enters the testing phase and finally applied to the stable version. This process normally takes quite some time. Debian unstable (Sid) should bever be used for production systems. Debian testing is not more unstable than many other distros and is also what Ubuntu is forked off every 6 months. More details about perl 5.10 and debian can be found here: http://lists.debian.org/debian-perl/2008/05/msg00000.html http://wiki.debian.org/Perl5.10Transition |
