The Void is the essential and primordial nonexistence in the lore of Dota 2.

Description

[edit]

Origins and scope

[edit]

Despite being pure nothingness, the void is absolutely omnipresent.[15] Such is its omnipresence that it overlaps with that of this Fundamental Io whose vast being occupies all planes at once,[16] and every thread of fate woven is touched by the void, making it inevitable.[17]

Nothingness exists inside of all things[6][18] just as all of existence exists within the void, leaving nothing outside of reality but the void.[19] Even moreso, nothing seems to exist beyond the void,[20] but Aghanim says otherwise as he claims to have sourced power beyond it.[21]

The void existed before the creation of existence, silently witnessing the series of moments that led to it, including the Elder Titan's arrival and the Sundering of the Primordial harmony, in which it felt the Fundamentals scattering into the Seven Planes and the birth of time itself.[22] The void also existed before the spirit itself.[23]

Properties

[edit]

The void is completely untouchable[24][25] and unfathomably darker than the absence of light itself.[26] It has nothing but inscrutable horror[27] and overwhelming despair in place of any mercy,[1] perhaps because it causes those who are trapped in it to be humbled when it makes them realize their infantile knowledge and mortality,[28] as well as draining and consuming hope from those who hold it against the void.[29][30]

Functions

[edit]

According to the void itself, the void is one of the vital ingredients of magic itself, alongside other unspecified ingredients. It is so vital to magic that it can't exist without the void.[31][32] Relatedly, the void seems to produce the Runes of Power,[33][34][35] like the Bounty Rune.[36]

Though not directly stated, it's implied the void also produces mana.[37] What implies is this is that the crystals of the Outworld (which are said to be the embodiments of the Void[38]) produces arcane energy that can be used to fuel magic.[39]

Besides magic, anything that exists is created out of nothing, making the void one of the sources of creation.[40][41]

The Void is the Astral Plane

[edit]

In Dota 2's lore, it's heavily implied that the astral plane and the void are one and the same. What implies is their shared functions and both of them being referred to interchangeably, like using the adjective “astral” for things from the void.

According to Void Spirit, within the void's vastness lies infinite possibilities.[42] These infinite possibilities are actually the multiverse.

Supporting this is Grimstroke's speculation on the Chaos Knight calling his legions' Phantasms out of the aether.[43] Grimstroke speculates this because this ability's lore states that these ethereal phantasms come from many planes, in many worlds, and even many times[44]—which can only come from the multiverse's countless worlds. So he must somehow know the aether holds the multiverse to ask this question.

This function of having the multiverse is shared with the Astral Plane, which implies that this plane and the void are one. Aghanim verifies this when he explains that he was lost in the astral plane's countless dimensions when he forged his titular Aghanim's Scepter.[45][46][47]

The void also functions as a mirror.[48] The Astral Plane also has this function because all trusted accounts on astral experiences may mention a strange reflection of the beholder, manifesting as a physical simulacrum with oddly distorted features and an available personality.[49]

There are also abilities involving the void that are described as “astral” (like the astral plane) in nature like Harbinger's Astral Imprisonment which banishes victims deep in the void and Inai's Astral Step where he tears a rift in the astral plane by passing through his void.[5][50] And since these void-based abilities are astral, then this implies that the void in these abilities is astral like the astral plane is.

In Inai's lore, the astral plane and the void are used interchangeably. Inai can see the future because of his advantageous vantage point in this astral plane from where he watches over the map of all time there, gazing the lines that streak across said astral plane to survey the fate of all existence.[51] It is also said that he watches over the cosmos from the void, but there can only be one place he watches from.[2][52] So, both the astral plane and the aether he watches reality from are one and the same.

Relationships

[edit]

Heroes

[edit]

Those close to the void typically have these traits: an inclination to control or humiliate others, pessimism, despair, and some form of nihilsm.

Ancient Apparition

[edit]

Kaldr, known in our world as the Ancient Apparition, is a being who awaits the universe at time's end with his bleak fate in which all matter will stop in a state of equilibrium. The true eternal form of Kaldr lurks beyond time itself in the cold infinite void from where his vile Apparition springs into existence, projected here by his will.[55][56]

The true function of his Cold Feet is that his mere presence brings others around him into a “frozen void” that threatens to lock them in an icy prison for eternity, far deadlier and more terrifying than trapping them in mundane ice.[57]

Anti-Mage

[edit]

According to the Anti-Mage's disciple, Wei, the “void” in Mana Void is not merely titular. Their technique involves the void itself once it consumes a mana-depleted victim[58] by turning the emptiness in their soul left by the missing mana against them.[59][60]

Enigma

[edit]

Enigma is the Fundamental of gravitation whose physical form is flesh made of void and darkness.[61][62] When his form (which is called his “pattern” to him) dissolves with his death, he returns to the void.[63] The same fate is prescribed to those he kills.[64][65]

Personality wise, Enigma is a lordly being who puts others under his control, like with his Demonic Conversion,[66][67] and his connection to Kaldr.[68][69] He's heavily pessimistic as he holds little faith in the existence of all existence itself[70][71] while sowing his pessimism on others by inflicting despair.[72][73] This is connected to his faith in the ontological form of nihilism.[74][75][76]

His unique abilities which involve the void include his Midnight Pulse, in which he drags a section of existence down into this void, creating a deadly area filled with dark resonance.[77][78]

Faceless Void

[edit]

Within the darkling and timeless void of Claszureme, the Faceless Void and his no-eyed kin activated from a state of dormancy, akin to that of fungi or lichen, when Clasz's membraneous being provided sustainable conditions for them to thrive in.[79]

When Darkterror dies, he enters some state of darkness,[80] which turns out to be Clasz who will consume him entirely as sacrifice,[81] possibly explaining why he, maybe as an Acolyte who is naive to his fate, wishes to be cast into the void's embrace.[82] Despite this he can still return to life and existence from Claszureme.[83]

Darkterror is a lordly being who seeks to rule over all things in existence,[84] which seems to drive this desire to rewrite time and fate.[85][86][87] Nevertheless, he gets his pessimism from his fatalistic outlook in which he has foreseen the destined end of all things.[88][89][90] Like other void characters, Darkterror is afflicted with existential nihilism, which he seems to only apply to this plane instead of his own existence.[91][92]

His abilities which involve the void include Time Walk, in which he exits time to pass through the timeless void of Claszureme (allowing him to travel distances in no time), before he reappears in another spot.[93][94] His own Time Lock freezes beings in time via knocking them into Claszureme.[95] Lastly, the feared Chronosphere's a rift in spacetime that leads to Claszureme, stopping all things in its temporal stasis and threatening to trap them there.[96]

Night Stalker

[edit]

What society knows as the Night Stalker is in fact one from the extinct night creatures, foul primordial beasts who once thrived in the early universe's natural state of darkness that predated the First Day itself, which wiped out his kind from the cosmos.[97]

Balanar is a malevolent beast who inflicts torment on others for the sake of it, much to his own pleasure.[98][99] He and his race made fearful servants and worshippers out of the ancient beasts they preyed on,[100][8] and this role of a Boogeyman was created by him to savor the fear that he as a figure of terror spreads.[97] He embodies despair as he sows it upon lesser beings as a means of domination.[9]

The Night Stalker's void-based powers include his aptly-named Void in which he creates a vile vortex that pulls others into the darkness he once thrived in, a space of the vile void itself where no light or hope can escape from.[30][101] Balanar can inflict Crippling Fear on others by summoning the spirits of his baleful brethren from the edges of the void, scaring the wits out of those who cross him.[102]

Outworld Destroyer

[edit]

Harbinger, the Outworld Destroyer, is the last of an alien race from the Outworld, a crystalline fortress perched at the edge of this cosmos where he, like his kind before him, watches over the nothingness beyond for a foretold threat that will come for our world.[103] The Void is the Destroyer's cloister of comfort since he peacefully meditates there, despite its incomprehensible horror,[27] and it functions as his afterlife[104] where he can resurrect from.[105] But those he sends to this place in death share no such luck.[106]

Like his kin, Harbinger is a lordly and magisterial being who seeks to bend the wills of others around him to his own[107][108][109] via use of fear and despair to dominate others,[110][111] all while he gains enjoyments out of humiliating lesser beings.[112] The prophecy of the end times has made him pessimistic,[113][114][115] and seeing the end of all things has made him existentially nihilistic.[116][117]

His closeness to the abyss allows him to harness its power in combat, as shown by his abilities. The Destroyer can lock others in the void in an Astral Imprisonment to condemn his victims into a period of dark contemplation on their lesser knowledge and mortality in the face of the vastness of nonexistence[118][119][120] all while siphoning their intellect from them.[121][122] This, in turn, fuels his Sanity's Eclipse (which gets power from the void itself[123]) to shatter feeble minds against a psychic blast from his accumulated wisdom.[124]

Pugna

[edit]
Speculation on Pugna being connected to the void on account of similarities between the two

Pugna may be related to the void, because the stuff in his background—the Nether Reaches, the force of Oblivion he embodies and the vile Arts of Oblivion that he wields, his personality—share similarities with the void.

Firstly, Pugna shares personality traits that are common with Heroes who are connected to the void. He is a control freak with sadistic inclinations, he is pessimistic in a sense that he strives to facilitate the worse that could happen, and he is said to be a nihilist by his erstwhile pet Viper. Whether he is existentially nihilistic or not is unknown, since this nihilism is often associated with the void in Dota 2, but it's clear as day that he is a nihilist.

Pugna's domineering and sadistic personality

  • ▶️ u Roll over and show me your belly.
  • ▶️ I renew my vows to cause the most possible suffering.
  • [?] versus What are you thinking, foolish pet? Obey your master!
  • [?] I HAVE NOT LOST CONTROL! I AM CONTROL!

Pugna's pessimistic personality

  • ▶️ As bad as things get, I can always come up with a way to make them a little worse.
  • ▶️ Ah, let's see if I can make the worst of a bad situation.

Pugna's nihilistic personality

  • [?] versus I am your pet no longer, ill-tempered little nihilist.

The Nether Reaches seem to be functionally similar to the void in a sense that they are both fundamental to sorcery. According to Pugna, all sorceries are sourced from the Nether. The void is an ingredient in the arcane arts that is so vital to it that there would be no magic without the void.

▶️ All sorceries have their source in the Nether Reaches.
Pugna on where all magic really comes from

Also, there is a jewelry (even though it's an ornate rock) called a Void Stone which is used to channel the Nether Reaches' energy. Besides being called a “Void Stone” in its name, this item shares a similar function with the void which is the in-game ability to provide mana energy in the form of its mana regeneration bonus.

If the Nether Reaches is the void because they share similiar functions, then the emerald flame he conjures from the Nether Reaches using the Arts of Oblivion is very similar to how Vrogros summons his Firestorm from the abyss using the arts of the Dark Rift. Pugna and Vrogros are alike because they are both subterranean monsters who use foul magic to call upon green flames from a deep place of evil.

Lastly, Pugna oftens mentions the mysterious force of Oblivion, which the void is also known by. All these similarities could be telling us that the Nether and the void are one.

Razor

[edit]

Unlike other void characters, Razor was not originally connected to the void at all. In life, the young being who would become the Lightning Revenant struck a bargain with the Court of Ristul to gain powers that would allow him to defeat his ancient enemy Storm Spirit. But he had to pay for such power by surrendering his sense of self, erasing all memories of his past life as he was reborn in the Underscape as the Lightning elemental who dominated the souls of the dead, but served the Court's demands unquestionably in the Narrow Maze.[125]

It was only when a “void-touched threat” sent by Inai into this Maze freed him from the mystic shackles that leashed him to the Court of Ristul. This entity sent from the void also infused Razor with the power of the void, combining it with his mastery over the elements.[126]

Not only did Razor gain the void's powers, but his mind has also been warped by its touch, giving him traits found in void characters. Although he is already a sadistic and masterful being, Razor has also become pessimistic in the wake of this void's infusion, believing the worse to come as the truth of existence.[127][128][129] He has become existentially nihilistic as well.[130][131][132]

Shadow Demon

[edit]
Speculation on the Shadow Demon being connected to the void on account of similarities between the two

Underlord

[edit]

Underlord is the Lord of the Abyss, hailing from this subterranean city of Aziyog, who seeks to expand his dominion with the lands beyond his own. To this end, Vrogros wields absolute command over the fearsome Abyssal Horde, the foul arts of the Dark Rift, and the bespoke dark weaponry of his demonsmiths to conquer the realms and demand subservience from those wise enough to fear his punishment.[133]

As an overwhelming force from the abyss, Vrogros embodies total domination over others, seeking their obedience and submissiveness to his dark will by using fear.[134][135][136][137] Although Vrogros is earnest in his work to expand his possessions, he may still derive pleasure from the sufferings and domination he inflicts on others.[138][139][140] Although Vrogros isn't pessimistic, he does embody despair.[141][142][143][144] Under his whelming Atrophy Aura, those who oppose Vrogros with the will to fight back will find it drained by his mere presence.[145]

His training in the arts of the Dark Rift lets him call down Firestorms whose corrupted blaze burns from the abyss.[146] Tapping deeper into his foul arts, he can tear open a Pit of Malice with his hatred as he taps into the twists between worlds, paralyzing any foes who are caught in this cruel pit,[147] while threatening to drop them into the abyss below.[148][149] But the apex of his techniques would be the Fiend's Gate, where he tears a rift in reality to transport his forces and allies across the abyss and into their destination to conquer nations.[3]

Void Spirit

[edit]

The one known as Void Spirit is the Void's sole and true incarnation.[150] Created at the dawn of the universe by the still formless void after it witnessed the Beginning to interact with the mortal plane,[23] Inai is projected from the void he embodies to our world in the Hidden Temple he constructed by himself when the affairs here attract his concern.[151] But while he dwells inside the void, he watches over reality's course in time's river and fate's path to ensure that it follows the destiny he prescribes it.[2]

made of void, void heals him[152] When Inai is somehow destroyed[153] respawn from void[154]

Inai is unique among the void characters in that he has most of their traits, but in a benevolent way. While Inai does share their inclination to control others, his is less sinister. When he visits the material plane, it is to control the destiny of it and its inhabitants so that they survive the Great Confluence, manipulating events to suit his ends[155][156] and instructing those who agree to serve him.[157][158] While he does apply existential nihilism to the lives of mortals, his brand of it is meant to give them comfort and relieve their burden.[159][160]

The Dead God

[edit]

The Dead God possesses a yawning pit (which seems to be in his belly) that leads to pure nothingness where the living are cast into by his foul followers to be left alone with other victims where they will hear the Dirge, a music that destroys their mind and leaves them with only hunger to turn themselves on each other as witless zombies in the void, before they are completely annihilated.[10]

Abyssal Blade

[edit]

Like its master for whom it was a bespoke weapon, the Abyssal Blade draws the Abyss' foul power[163][164] to cut deep into the soul.[165]

Bottle

[edit]

Inai states that only the Bottle can contain the void, which might refer to the runes that the void produces with inscrutable means.[166]

Ninja Gear

[edit]

The Ninja Gear is a set of valuable stealth equipment found by a young explorer among the flotsam and detritus drifting in the void.[167]

Sange and Yasha

Aghanim's Labyrinth: Continuum Conundrum

  • “I would make you choose, mortal. With the knowledge that thousands of your kind have appeared before me, brief flickers of warmth in the comforting abyss, quickly dissipating into a state of nothingness functionally no different from the professed state of order in which they came within my sight. For nothing they could accomplish would weight worthy in the eyes of one such as me. So choose that which you take from here, knowing that I care not what you choose, and that you go forth towards either victory or defeat, but most certainly continuing upon an unrelenting march towards death.”

Trivia

[edit]
  • Purple (or other similar colors like violet) and green seem to be the colors of the void. Some Heroes who represent the void often have the aforementioned colors as a major part of their design's color scheme.
    • In some cases, blue (which is between green and purple in the color wheel) is also used by some Heroes who are connected to the void itself, like Night Stalker's appearance and Outworld Destroyer's spells.
