I paid the ultimate price when I took the gamble to save my mate’s soul.

Ferry

Ferryman. The Grim Reaper. La Muerte. La Pelona. Shinigami. Charon.

I’ve been called many names over the millennia, all thanks to my role in Hell.

Ferrying dead souls over the river Styx.

But few know the demon behind the legend, how I came to be here, or the freedom I sacrificed to save the man I love.

Now I’m free to find him again. The problem? He doesn’t remember me.

And he’s straight.

Leo fell madly in love with me once before. Will he fall again before it’s too late?

Leo

All my life, I’ve felt like something is missing. Neither my job as a firefighter, my brother Matty, nor my ex-girlfriends have been able to fill that hole.

When a mysterious stranger approaches me in a bar, I find myself captivated.

I’ve never been attracted to men before, but I can’t seem to resist him.

Why is it that spending time with Ferry feels so…right? So familiar?

Patience is a fated-mates, second-chance PNR romance. The first in the Damned Connections series, each book will follow a different couple as they find their HEA. Although better read in order, these books can stand alone.

I LOVE FERRY!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE LEO!!!!!!!!! I LOVE LARK TAYLOR!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!

This book is up there in my Lark Taylor favorites. I say that after reading every one of her books, but anyway. I’m just so obsessed with this. I’ve had a hard time putting it down. I was almost late to my jury duty orientation because I couldn’t stop reading and you know what it means if you don’t show up to that stuff? Contempt of court. I risked it all for Ferry, but it was worth it. I’m being really dramatic, but the point here is that I really loved this book.

I really don’t know how to write this review without spoiling everything. There is a lot of stuff in the prologue that fills you in. Speaking of the prologue??? It made me want to cry big fat crocodile tears. If you thought Dagon and Dimitri’s book in the reckless damned series was a tear jerker, that one has nothing on this book. This was far worse. This author must be just a tad sadistic because why would she put my man and ME through that? It was so good, but oh my god was it sad. My poor Ferry. He’s gone through so much. If you read the reckless damned series, you know that Ferry was the ferryman in Hell. He was in charge of ferrying souls across the river Styx. At the end of that series, there was a battle in Hell that lead to Ferry being able to leave Hell. And he was getting the heck out of dodge. Apparently being stuck in Hell was his consequence for saving his mate, and now that the deal is broken, he’s going to earth to find him. The problem here is that Ferry’s mate doesn’t remember him, and he says that he’s straight. Ferry has his work cut out for him.

I loved Leo almost as much as I loved Ferry. And them together? Wow. They are so perfect for each other in every way. I loved watching Ferry get to know Leo and watching them fall in love. Leo is such a good man. So kind and loyal and protective. And don’t even get me started on Leo’s brother Matty. That man is a total sweetheart that deserves everything good and pure in this world. Leo is very protective of him, and in turn, so is Ferry. I think I could probably wax poetically about this book for days.

I’m always going to mention the spice. Whenever I read reviews, I always want to know the level of spice in a book, so that’s why I include it in my reviews. And the spice in this book? Very spicy. Leo and Ferry are so dirty. They both have filthy mouths, and they know how to back it up. And we LOVE that. It was so good. Leo also has a jealous streak, and when it gets flared up, we see the results in the bedroom. This author never lets me down in the spice department.

I loved the characters in this. We got to see all the characters from the reckless damned series since this book is a spin-off, but we also got introduced to some new characters that were fabulous. I’m looking forward to seeing them all get their books in the future.

It wouldn’t be a Lark Taylor book if there wasn’t some kind of conflict. It’s not like those unnecessary conflicts that some books have. The conflicts are always vital to the plot, and they always include some form of fighting and violence. Which is very good. I always try to figure out what will happen, but she always manages to shock me. Which she did again in this book. So good.

This is one of those books for me that I want to turn right back to page 1 and start reading all over again once I finished. It’s definitely one of my top reads of the year. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. She wasn’t planning on writing the next character’s book so soon, but she said on her facebook group that the characters started talking so she’s writing. I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone on earth heard my shout of joy. I’ve been excited for this particular character for a while. It’s going to be so good. The only issue will be waiting for it to come out. Pray for me. In the meantime, let’s re-read this book.

So if you want to read about a demon x firefighter, second chances, found family, and a bi-awakening, give this book a chance!!

I received a copy of the book, and this is my honest review.

***4.75 rating***

After reading Justice, I am changing this to a 4.75 rating.

"He’d been my first and only. And would be until we were nothing more than dust between stars."

Before diving into my review, I'd like to mention that I wish I had read the Reckless Damned series first, as there is a significant character crossover between the two series. Initially, I felt a bit lost not knowing who was who, but despite that, I found this story quite enjoyable.

The title "Patience" is fittingly chosen for this book and let me elucidate why. We are introduced to Ferenc, affectionately known as Ferry, who bears various monikers like Ferryman, The Grim Reaper, La Muerte, La Pelona, Shinigami, and Charon. He has been ensnared in Hell for countless millennia, a consequence of his ultimate sacrifice in saving the soul of his beloved human mate. Ferry, once an original fallen angel, experienced the tumultuous path of loving a mortal. Following his act of rescuing Leof’s soul, Ferry strikes a fateful deal with an angel named Eliza, imprisoning him in Hell, assigned to ferry departed souls. As part of this pact, Eliza grants Ferry a single wish: the opportunity for Leo to see Ferry in Hell after living out his earthly life. Leo's soul reincarnates repeatedly, and just before embarking on the next chapter of his existence, he is granted one hour to reunite with Ferry. It's an achingly poignant situation to imagine, burying your soulmate 68 times while they continue their existence, oblivious to your shared history. My heart ached for Ferry, the injustice of it all evident. Yet, there was still a glimmer of hope.

When Ferry made his fateful pact with Eliza to safeguard Leo's soul, he never anticipated the possibility of leaving Hell and reuniting with his cherished mate. Astonishingly, such an opportunity arises, and Ferry embarks on a quest to locate Leo.

In this lifetime, Leo's sexual orientation is different from his previous incarnations; he identifies as straight, once again without recognition of Ferry. However, during a “chance” encounter at a gay bar, Leo finds himself inexplicably drawn to a mysterious stranger who exudes an uncanny familiarity.

Unbeknownst to Leo, the face of Ferry remains unrecognizable, but a persistent sense of incompleteness has haunted him throughout his existence. Whether among friends or with female partners, he has always felt an inexplicable void, as though an essential piece of the puzzle is missing. Leo's inexplicable attraction to Ferry, a man, adds further to his confusion about his own identity. Fate, it seems, has other plans for their lives. As they grow closer, Leo's attraction to Ferry deepens, despite the initial perplexity. Leo goes to great lengths to pursue this connection, while Ferry, ever the vigilant observer, keeps a watchful eye on Leo and his brother Matty. Both men grapple with possessive feelings toward one another, but while Ferry has never forgotten Leo, Leo struggles to comprehend this enigmatic bond.

Despite their mutual attraction, they opt to maintain a platonic friendship. This choice is heartrending, as after 4000 years, Ferry yearns for a deeper connection with Leo. The longing and anguish are palpable, making their situation profoundly poignant. Complicating matters further, Leo's perilous occupation as a firefighter stirs deep concerns in Ferry's heart. Eventually, they decide to explore their romantic attraction, yet history appears destined to repeat itself. Their renewed relationship is not without its challenges, as the specter of their shared past continues to haunt them. Will these two soulmates ever find their enduring happily ever after?

Indeed, they do, but not without keeping you on edge and engrossed in concern for Leo and Ferry throughout the journey. These two characters, especially Ferry, deserve nothing less than the world. I was fervently rooting for them from beginning to end, and when they finally achieved their long-awaited happily ever after, I was elated. As previously mentioned, while "Patience" can be read as a standalone, I wholeheartedly recommend immersing yourself in the Reckless Damned series first for a more enriched reading experience. I eagerly await the unfolding of Matty and Sebastian's story, curious to see how Lark will tell their story.

In summary, "Patience" was an immensely enjoyable story, and I rejoiced in witnessing Ferry's eventual reunion with his beloved Leof. 🥺

Expect:

-Fated Mates
-Paranormal Romance
-Found Family
-Second Chance
-Bi-awakening
-Demon x Firefighter
-Possessiveness/Jealousy
-CW- please check before reading 😊

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

reread:
managed to read this without crying i feel like i deserve some sort of medal

original review:
i will start planning my vacations around books. i had zero time to read and i kept thinking about this and it was hell. if you think this is too much, please go away i don’t need that kind of negativity in my life.

i don’t know how lark always exceeds my expectations. i liked ferry and i knew his story would be good. but this? this was better than anything i could imagine.
i cried multiple times because this woman is simply evil but i loved it so much.
(i’m obviously still not okay and this is the best i can do right now, okay?)

i already can’t wait to reread this beautiful bitter sweet story. definitely sweet in the end, but damn if it wasn’t painful. for me, mostly. (yes, technically ferry and leo suffered more than me but they’re fictional so they don’t really count)

i strongly advice to read the reckless damned before this. i think they explain everything but it might be too much info/characters all at once.

“It’s you, Leo. It’s only ever been you. It’ll only ever be you.”

One of my favorite love stories of the year,if not ever.
The unconditional and immortal love Ferenc has for Leof is so beautiful and sad it made my heart hurt for him, while also rooting for their happily ever after.

Lark Taylor had me crying my eyes out on the second page, and can we talk about chapter 12?!
The writing was amazing, I love when I can get lost in the fantasy and the emotions really bleed through you can almost feel them.

He was just Ferry. My lover. My mate. My everything.

The paranormal elements take a bit of a step back in this one, letting the romance stand front and center.
While not being strictly connected, I do feel it’s better to read The Reckless Damned series before reading this one, since it does pick up right after the events of the last of the series. It also helps to know the backstory of the other characters, that are present throughout the book.

Can’t wait for the next one!

CW and tropes(spoilers):
- Fated mates
- Grim reaper vs human
- Second chance
- Found family
- Vers MCs
- Gay awakening
- Frotting

This story is intense, fast-paced, sizzling hot, and romantic.

Ferry deserved that HEA a thousand times over! Can we talk about the lat pulldown maneuver, please? DYING. 🤣

Alex was annoying initially with his constant "I'm straight" pronouncements. Like, dude, read the signs! He grew on me, but I felt like the jump from denial to full acceptance was somewhat abrupt.

The sons of Lucifer are all up in this story, but we're introduced to new characters I'm fully invested in. I'm looking at you Danny, Matty, Sebastian, and Toby.

What this story is not is a standalone. If you haven't read at least a couple books in The Reckless Damned series, you'll be completely lost.

What I found irritating were the various references to M/M romance titles/authors in the guise of "oooh, it's for the book club!"

I felt like I was reading product placement adverts, like in articles/Instagram posts where they casually, oh-so-subtly (not!) mention a mascara brand.

Why though? Is the author pimping out their friends? It was exceedingly overt and pulled me out of what is supposed to be a fantasy story.

Dropping a half star for that. Please stop it!

Would we ever get back there?

This is the kind of book that made you grieve the love you never had. Unconditional love. I understand that’s the power of fiction, but this one truly left a deep impression on me.

Books that make us cry hold a special place in our hearts, right? So here is my crying log: 4%, 11%, 28%, 42%, 61%, 80%, 92%, 95% and 99% annnnnd now I’m a hot fucking messs sooooooo this is obviously a well deserved 5 stars.

I enjoyed every second I had with this book. I don’t think the touch of supernaturals and contemporary would work this well. The second chance trope was peeeeeerfect. The amalgam between gloomy, grief, angst, humor and happy moments were perfect. This made me wailed in tears, but also giggled a LOT of times in every chapter. It has the right pages to swoon over and to cry over. And to hell did I swoon. It was all done so well, so put together.

Finally being able to touch him like I had before had unlocked the box where I’d hidden all my emotions. The sadness, grief, longing…all the feelings I’d suppressed from missing him for so long were too close to the surface now.

The main character Ferry deserve the highlights here.
I love Ferry and every single thing about him. I am writing this, crying thinking of his character and how he depicted such significant impact on me. His determination, charisma and his love for Leo. Gosh, the love he had for Leo? I kept asking myself how is this kind of love is possible? How is someone capable of doing what Ferry did for Leo? How can a person capable of such love? I feel pity for him and I was so so sad reading his part of the story. I cried a lot because of him. But I was also rooting for him like crazy. It’s like I know they’re gonna be together, but I was still rooting for them as if they won’t get together. That was a once in a blue moon experience for me, and I loved that. I kept imagining the memories he had of Leo and Leo had none of it and the way he lived all his lives without his mate, God, that was physically painful. I can’t stop crying everytime I think of it. I am still crying thinking of it. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything more painful and I don’t think that kind of pain Ferry went through can just….heal. It hurts so bad. Leo and Ferry both make a perfect, sweetheart, top tier couples. One of the best I’ve read this year. They made me swoon, cry and laugh throughout the entire book. They have left an indelible mark on my heart, firmly becoming one of my favourite couples.

Come on, Leof. You know me. Claim me.

The writing. This was very difficult to put down, and I didn’t skim this book at all. I zoomed thru the GR updates and I finished it so fast. This was easy, fast and entertaining. It’s really difficult for me to enjoy amateur writing in my gay romance, most of my favourite books are poetic and lyrical, but I guess this is beyond the quality of the story that made me love it so much. As for the plotline, this book is lighter on the depth of the supernatural elements, but it was there as a small touch to the storyline of the book. And for someone who love the quality of emotional bonding over constant sex, this had the perfect sex scenes. Expect heavy romance with a subplot of pnr/fantasy and you're good to go.

This might be my Leo, but he was constantly surprising me. Learning all his new facets, the differences caused by the life he’d lived here, had me falling for him all over again.

AND CHAPTER 33?????? ?!?!! WHAT THE FUCK 😭😭😭 THAT WAS SO SHOCKINGLY GOOD THAT WAS OH MY HEART I HAD TO PUT THE BOOK DOWN TO HOLD MYSELF TOGETHER. THAT WAS PERFECT WTF 😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

“Thousands of years ago, there was a young man who lived in Thiva. Thebes,” I clarified at his puzzled expression. “This man was a swordsmith, well known across nations for his skill at crafting blades.” — This will be the new bedtime story for kids. Fuck those fairy tales.

my favourite details:
- Chapter 12 🫶🏻 sooo cute!
- “We are mates. When we leave this life, we will leave it together.”
- ‘I accept the bond’ AAAAAAAACCKKK
- Chapter 33 !!!!!!
- Epilogue
- “Ferenc.”

Patience is a fantastic paranormal romance between Ferry, the Grim Reaper of Hell and Leo his human mate reincarnated. I knew this story was special when the prologue had me tearing up. From the prologue you can clearly see the devoted love between Ferry and his mate, which is both heartbreaking and moving.

In present day, Ferry, recently freed from Hell is finally able to find his mate, Leo who has no memories of their shared past and connection. This part of the story where Ferry tries to woo Leo without being too overbearing, is so sweet to see. To watch him withold his nature and true feelings for his mate was fascinating to see. I also loved seeing how possessive Leo is for Ferry and his confusion as to why he feels so strongly for a stranger.

Their love story has many emotional moments and many tense moments that had me concerned for these two, but in the end I was so happy to see their long-awaited HEA. Overall I loved this story so much. I love fated mates and Ferry and Leo are fantastic together. I also enjoyed how everyone banded together to help bring Leo and Ferry together, creating such a fun and supportive family.

Cannot wait for the next entry!!!

Ummm woooooow so yeah i really enjoyed this book! this is probably THE MOST "soulmate-romance" to ever have soulmate-romanced !!! and while the previous series wasn't much of a win for me, Ferry and Leo's love story admittedly had me teary eyed for parts of this to full out sobbing a few times as well. i want to say that it was some full-hearted fluff that actually redeemed this author a bit for me, and this first installment has successfully piqued my curiosity enough that i am pretty certain i'll be reading Justice when it drops! A bit of sexy fun with some big feels!

MM Romance
Epic Fated Mates
5++ Stars ⭐️

I loved this. It took my most favorite angsty trope and put a new spin on it. I love unrequited love, the right person but the wrong time, epic soulmate or fated mate stories that span multiple years with time apart but then they are reunited. I eat these stories up and I devoured this. Ferry and Leo are tethered into my soul and the prologue to their story had me in tears. As the book unfolded I realized I should have read The Reckless Damned Series first because of the overlapping characters and events but I couldn’t wrench myself away from Ferry and Leo and I don’t regret my choice. That said, I am going to go back and read that series then read this again and I know once I do this book will read completely different because I won’t just have the incredible love story but the back stories of all the side characters I adored in this book.

So for anyone who likes to read books in the correct order, make sure you pick up The Reckless Damned Series first but for maybe the first time ever, not having the backstory did not dim my enjoyment at all because Ferry and Leo were such special characters. And OMG I cannot wait for the next book! I NEED their story now!!

Ferry absolutely broke my heart!

I loved this return to Southampton and the friendships between both Ferry and Dimitri, and Leo and Danny were so good.

The relationship between Ferry and Leo was my favourite in this storyworld so far because Leo had no hesitation pretty quickly, instead of the dancing around that everyone else did.

I didn't particularly like Leo getting his memories back - it felt too convenient because they both already knew they loved each other before that happened. I actually felt their relationship was strong enough to not need the memories but that was my only complaint with this story.

I'm so impatient waiting to find out what's going on with Toby and Blaise 😂 I'm expecting an epic romance from all the build up over multiple books now.

Also massively intrigued by the prospect of Matty and Sebastian - the idea of snooty Sebastian lowering himself to being mates with a human crocheter made me laugh so hard and I cannot wait to see it!

MCD tag put in because Leo dies....a lot. But he doesn't stay dead so don't worry about that!

Ferry finally gets his love story and it did not disappoint.

His great love is Leof, aka Leo, and when he dies 10 years in their happy life together (during the battle of Lucifer vs. God), Ferry is prepared to join him, as they're fated mates, and Leo's death means Ferry's death.

But then Eliza, one of the angels who didn't fall with Ferry, still has a soft spot for him, and offers to bind Leo's soul to hers for as long as she has immortal life, meaning he'll be reincarnated over and over again, and for one hour after his death on earth, he and Ferry can meet and he'll remember everything, even though he never remembers anything while living his human life on earth.

Man, get you a man who will wait 4,000 years for you. It's very Rory on Doctor Who, who waits 2,000 years for Amy.

Ferry never even touches another. Leo is and always will be, his one and only. And I mean, with how finite mates are, why would Ferry every want anyone else? Especially when even though he can't truly have Leo, he knows Leo is alive, and that one day, maybe....they could have a real shot at forever again, even if that mean the death of the arch angel Eliza.

And that day finally comes when, after the battle from the last book (which I didn't read, and I did miss things, plot wise, but oh well! I caught up the more I read), Eliza dies.

Which means Leo is no longer tied to her. But also, he's not tied to Ferry either with their bond, so he has this one life left.

Unless Ferry goes topside for the first time in 4,000 years (as part of the deal of Leo being reincarnated over and over again, Ferry can never go topside), meets Leo again, and gets him to accept the mating bond all over again.

Which is a little tricky when Leo doesn't remember Ferry or their previous life together at all and is just seemingly normal guy living in the 21st century.

But Leo, who in this life, thinks he's straight, meets Ferry, everything changes for him. He tries to deny that he's into a man for a bit, but can't deny it soon enough. The pull towards Ferry is just too much for him to ignore.

But as Ferry and Leo get to know each other all over again - or more, Ferry gets reacquainted with Leo, as even after 4,000 years he still remembers everything about him - they start to fall for each other so easily.

But Ferry has to pretend to be an ordinary human at first, as this Leo doesn't know about the supernatural and wouldn't believe him. Seeing the calm and assured Ferry get so flustered around Leo, and look silly - as he isn't so familiar with modern things - is so endearing. He might be known as the "Grim Reaper" but with Leo he's just a man hopelessly in love.

I loved both of their possessiveness in this, especially Leo's. And especially because he was still trying to deny that he had real feelings for Ferry for quite some time. But damn he sure would get pissed at anyone even touching Ferry, it was hilarious.

As the plot moves forward, there seems to be an arch angel after Ferry and potentially after Leo, but Ferry doesn't know who, and no one else does either.

To make matters worse, after Ferry marks Leo (not bond, just marks), he starts to weaken, his powers becoming almost nonexistent, and no one knows why.

Several times, it seems like these two are just destined to never get their happy ending, forever in a Romeo and Juliet type scenario, with Leo always dying.

But they finally, finally, after 4,000 LONG years, get their happy ending. Ferry waited 68 lifetimes to finally get his happy ending with Leo. Knowing that he had to bury Leo's body after every one hour visit in hell before Leo would be reborn again is heartbreaking. These two went through so much pain and suffering to get their HEA.

And I was tempted to take off a little bit for how Leo dies the first time. Him jumping in front of Ferry to protect him from an arch angel even though Ferry is physically stronger than him and probably would have survived it...it annoyed me. Like how STUPID of Leo, to give up his forever with Ferry that way.

But the more I thought about and learned about Leo, the more it made sense, even though it still makes me want to smack him upside the head. And also if him not stepping in meant the end of Ferry's immortal life? I get why Leo couldn't bear the thought. So I understand it. Even though it ends with them having to go through 4,000 damn years of heartache and pain. Or, well, Ferry. Not that Leo knew that would happen, but still. Idiot man.

Overall, this was just so good and I was so happy that Ferry finally got his HEA with the man he loves. I'm very intrigued for Matty and Sebastian's story (I'm assuming it's gonna be them, although I could be wrong. It's strongly hinted that it's them, though). It'll be interesting to see how Sebastian, who seems like such a cunt, will soften around Matty, who is is full of sunshine and sweetness. I want to see that man become whipped for the sweetheart that is Matty. He better!

I can't wait. Onto the next! 😍

Ok, so this was simply AMAZING! 😍😍😍

Lark Taylor is one of my favourite authors, I think I've already mentioned that a few times, right? 🤪

I've read all her books and I've been waiting for this one since we first saw Ferry... I found him so intriguing and I already knew I was going to love him… And wow, I was definitely right about that.

It's probably the most appropriate book title I've ever seen!
To say that Ferry has been patient all these years is the understatement of the year. I felt so sorry for him... He's incredible and I really admire him! 🥹

Ferry stepped closer but didn't touch me.
"You are the only one I'm interested in, Leo. Ever since the day I first saw you, I've not thought of another. You're all I can see. All I can think about. All I want."

He and Leo more than deserved their happy ending… 💜💜💜💜

"Oh, it wouldn't be just like that. I've waited thousands of years to have you back in my life, and I won't let you walk away now without a fight. Not only that, but I once made you a promise. A promise that I wouldn't give up on us. I'll use every trick in my arsenal to try and persuade you to give us a chance. I'll spend every waking hour utilising everything I know about you to try and win you over. You're it for me, Leo. You always have been and always will be. And I don't care how long it takes, but I'll wait until you realise I'm the one for you too."

I loved Leo's protectiveness, tenacity and loyalty. He's just the best too!

"I don't understand anything that's happened today," he said. "Not really. But I'm a big believer in following your gut. And my gut says you're it for me. This is so much to take in, but the one thing I'm certain of is that I don't want you to walk away. Just the thought of it.." He shivered as fear pulsed down through the mark once more. "I don't know why, but I can't stand it. So whatever you're facing, whatever is going on, we will face it together."

It makes so much sense that these two are fated mates, they make the perfect couple. 🥰

And what a wonderful gift Lark has given us by putting the entire gang of the other books in this one! It made me so happy to see them all along… 😁
(well except maybe for Sebastian, we'll have to see how it turns out 😅)

"Oh, I do." He scrutinised me for a minute before giving me a sly grin.
"I don't think you've got much to worry about. Have you looked in a mirror recently?"
I gave him a deadpan glare. "He's straight."
"No, he's pan," Harlow corrected, repeating what I'd told him earlier.
"He just needs to have his… awakening. Think how much fun that will be!"

And the new characters she introduced? They all already have a special place in my heart. 💞

Once again, I can't wait for all her next books!

I wish I knew this was a spinoff to another series. It’s really book 5 as far as I can tell, it’s set in the same world with all the same characters. There are 4 couples from the previous books and lots of side characters and backstory with the Ferry and the other characters that I would have loved to have known before starting this.

I haven’t read many demon/angel books - this felt pretty light going, kind of romcomish?? The prologue made me think this was going to be really epic but it was very fluffy.

This was an easy read, although I didn’t love the writing I’m keen to go back and try the first series.

Loved the narrators! They definitely made this much better in my opinion - Will Watts and Dan Calley

Even though he’d forget me… forget everything we were, I didn’t want him to know the full extent of my suffering.

Man, what a brilliant freaking book. I loved it. Will reread. Hope it’s released on audio one day.

This was a completely different take on the ‘second chance’ trope, and it was heartbreaking. At the same time it was beautiful and romantic, with two well written MCs

I thought I’d known pain. Torture. Longing. But none of that compared to having Leo in my arms and him not knowing who I was. Who he was to me.

It can for sure be read as a standalone, but there were a lot of characters to keep track of. The cast from The Reckless Damned series were all involved, as well as loads of new characters being introduced to set up the rest of this series. I have only read book 1 of the previous series, and although it was fine, I’m sure it would’ve been easier and even more enjoyable if I had finished that series first.

Other than that though (and it wasn’t really a problem), it was brilliant. A touch of action, a heartwarming second chance, and a unique paranormal world set in the UK. I am also super impressed by the work that must’ve gone into making the timeline and plot work in this book, as it basically spans 4000 years (most of them are not on page lmao). You could tell the characters history were well thought out.

What if Leo looked at me with disgust? Rejected me again? Thought I was stalking him? I mean… I was, but I didn’t want him to know that.

Sebastian, the human-hating, super duper dickish vampire is up next, and I believe his love interest will be Matty, the tiny sweetheart, the adorable makeup-wearing little brother of Leo. I can’t wait, honestly.

The pieces clicked into place. This was Toby’s cousin, the hacker Danny had told me about. The one who was incredibly useful, but as Danny had put it, an utter cunt. “You’re Sebastian.”

“God, it’s quiet today.” Danny’s statement had me and every other fucker on the crew groaning. “Why would you say that?”

“What happened to the angel and his human?” I wanted to pull him into my lap. To hold him in my arms as I recounted the worst memory I held.

He sighed again. Honestly, if we didn’t have a clock ticking, I’d be tempted to ask him if he was suffering from low oxygen levels.

Ferry glared at me. “Are you saying I’m stupid enough to get caught? It’s only a little bit of murder. I could do that in my sleep.”

“I love you, Ferry,” he whispered.“Thank you for waiting for me.”
I cupped his face.“Always, Leo. I’d have waited forever if it meant getting another shot at happiness with you.”

I loved Ferry and Leo so much. I felt so bad for Ferry though, he had to live 4000 years without his mate and only got to see him for an hour after every death 😭 I was crying so much in the prologue.

I took one final look at the long line of stones before me. Some greyed. Some covered in moss. Some disintegrating entirely thanks to the time that had passed.
Sixty-eight graves for my Leof.
Sixty-eight times my heart had been broken.

I swear instant tears.

He’d been my first and only. And would be until we were nothing more than dust between stars.

Between reading Patience and the Sons of the Fallen by Jaclyn Osborn, I've been reading a lot of paranormal romances about angels and demons lately. Not planned but I am having a good time.

I love Ferry and Leo together. Their first meet (in this lifetime) was off the charts, and their chemistry was palpable. The author did such a good job imbuing their relationship with the weight of Leo's past life with Ferry, even though he doesn't remember anything.

One thing though is that I wish I had read The Reckless Damned series, as the couples there are side characters in this one. I was still able to enjoy this book and was never lost, but I could tell there was history that would have enhanced my experience had I read their books first. I think I'm going to go back and finish off that series before continuing with Justice.

__
Patience is a romance that features reincarnation. Ferry was an angel who took a human lover as a mate. In order to protect and be with his mate he sided with Lucifer in a battle that culminated in his mate dying and himself fallen and punished to remain in hell, overseeing souls crossing.

But Eliza, an angel and childhood friend of Ferry, takes pity and binds his mate to herself. So as long as she lives, his mate will be reincarnated every time he dies. Ferry's punishment is also linked to Eliza's life. So when she passes, he will finally have a chance to reunite with his mate. But on the flipside it puts his mate in danger as it will be his last lifetime unless they are able to complete the mating bond.

But Elize is an immortal being, so Ferry has to wait 68 lifetimes of his mate before Eliza passes and he's free from his punishment. Watching him die and only getting an hour with his soul before he's reincarnated again.

Leo is Ferry's reincarnated mate, with no memory of his past lives. He also hasn't had his sexual awakening yet and believes himself to be straight. So Ferry's got his work cut out for himself. Especially, when an unknown angel starts leaving him threatening messages, and with Leo now even more vulnerable.

"He didn’t stop until his hand came to my throat. Wrapping it around the back of my neck, he pulled me until our foreheads rested together. We were both breathing hard, like we’d been working out in the gym rather than standing in a bar. "It’s you, Leo. It’s only ever been you. It’ll only ever be you."

Patience by Lark Taylor is the first book in her new Damned Connections linked standalones series. This is Ferry and Leo's story. Whilst you don't need to have read the author's Reckless Damned series to enjoy this one, it is highly recommended that you do, because of the crossover of characters and storylines - sooo many cameos in this one!

This is a paranormal romance between a fallen angel, now demon, Ferry, the Ferryman of the river Styx (aka the Grim Reaper/Charon) and his human Leo, who have been fated mates for over 4000 years. Except Leo doesn't remember any of his 68 previous lives, or Ferry, or any of the other supernaturals he's encountered, and on top of that he thinks he's straight and has no idea trouble is following Ferry all the way from Hell!

All of which makes for a fabulous read, particularly if you enjoy:

🖤 MM PNR
🖤 Fated mates
🖤 Second chances
🖤 Found family
🖤 Bi-awakening
🖤 First times
🖤 HEA

Loved it!

DNF @ 21%

I'm so tired of authors using misleading marketing to draw in readers who are looking for something different and intense while the book delivers the same boring, generic crap that's been a done a thousand times before. This book is a prime example of it because when you look at that gorgeous cover and read the summary, it sets up certain expectations. The summary references one character having served as hell's ferryman for thousands of years as punishment. He's been forcibly separated from his mate for those years and then he's given a chance to reunite with him. It all sounded incredible! But it turns out that the supernatural elements and the referenced time spans are just set dressing that attempt to disguise a generic rom-com-type fated mates romance that's been done a thousand times before.

The story starts out with a bang. This was an EPIC setup!! The angst involved was incredible, the emotions, the intensity, the creativity - I WAS SO EXCITED!!

But...I got very concerned when all of the above - ALL OF IT!! - takes place during the prologue. The prologue of a book that's nearly 400 (!!!) pages long. Somebody more optimistic might think 'oh, if the author crammed all that good stuff in the prologue then the actual story must be the most epic PNR to ever exist'. Well...I'm too familiar with the low effort, generic crap that most romance authors create via keyboard smashing so I hoped for the best but expected the worst...and my expectations were proven right.

From the start of the first chapter, this story turns into the type of boring, repetitive, low effort romance that has been written a thousand times before in this genre. Leo spends all his time living his normal life, constantly chatting with pointless side characters and angsting over how he's 100% straight but somehow incredibly attracted to 'Ferry'. There's lots of hand wringing about this, lots of discussions with side characters etc etc etc etc.

As for Ferenc - the guy may have spent 4000 years living in hell, ferrying the souls of the damned across the River Spynx and spending his days looking forward to that one special hour he gets to spend with the man he loves before he's back to his depressing grind for another 80-odd years - but none of that matters in the actual story. Ferenc acts and talks like anybody else who lives in the 21st century and after he's given a quick technology how-to by side characters, he's fully up to speed on how to live in the 21st century. Because you know - having somebody go from living in human society that existed 4000 years ago to learning how to use a smartphone is definitely a process that only takes a few hours. A lot of characters marvel over how Ferenc is able to easily adjust to life on earth in the 21st century and he just shrugs it off and readers are supposed to be impressed by how amazing Ferenc is. My eyes rolled so hard that they nearly fell out of my head.

The author did make a tiny effort to make the conversations in ye-olden-days sound old timey, but the effort was poorly done (as is everything else in this book). First of all - nothing even close to English existed 4000 years ago so it would have been nice to have a little throwaway line about the characters speaking Latin or whatever would have made sense. But then it gets worse because the author takes a lazy approach to writing old-timey dialog by just removing all contractions and considering that a job well done. Never mind that this isn't even close to reflecting how people spoke even 100 years ago but it made the characters sound like robots. But then the author also had Ferenc using modern profanity in those same conversations and that's when I knew that the author had no desire to take the premise seriously.

The other big problem is that the author claims this is a standalone and it's also the first in a new series. What the author doesn't tell you is that side characters from the author's previous series take up a huge amount of page time. It seemed like every few pages, side characters were showing up and it felt like readers were supposed to know who they were. Not only that, but these side characters have complex histories with Ferenc, they're either supernatural creatures or they're humans who are bonded to supernatural creatures and I couldn't keep track of who was who, what species they were or who was bonded with who. Several reviewers point out how confusing and annoying this made the story and it emphasizes that authors aren't doing themselves a favor when they lie about their book being a standalone in order to draw in new readers. When you add in other side characters (like Leo's brother and the brother's friends), there ended up being over a dozen named side characters who I didn't care about and couldn't keep track of.

Lastly, the story itself was incredibly boring and generic. The pacing moved at a glacial speed due to the characters constantly having the same conversations over and over again and having the same internal monologues over and over again. There were also odd rom-com vibes, like when Leo claps his hand over his mouth when he says something he shouldn't or that absurd scene where Ferenc pretends to know how to be a personal trainer when he's never stepped foot into a gym. There are readers who would find this sort of thing hilarious but I'm not in that group. My problem is that the book wasn't marketed as being a generic, silly rom-com with supernatural elements. The cover art and the summary make it seem like a dark, intense PNR that takes the characters' personalities, histories and 'creature status' seriously. That's what I wanted to read and instead, I get the same boring, generic plot that's been done a thousand times before. Except in this case, the author uses supernatural creatures as set dressing and somehow manages to pad the story out to be nearly 400 pages.

Sidenote: the author apparently lives in England and the book is supposed to take place in England (based on specific references, such as them living in Southampton, the store Boots and other things) but there's nothing British about the way any of the characters talk or behave. There are a tiny handful of British phrases spread throughout, but they didn't seem correctly written and felt out of place. Why bother having your story take place in a non-US country when you're going to write it as if it's taking place in the US anyway? It didn't matter in which English speaking country the story took place, so I didn't get it. This was yet another annoying distraction.

This author clearly isn't for me, which is a huge disappointment because I'd been looking forward to this book for ages.

I LOVED THIS STORY! I want to kick my own ass for not reading it sooner. Here I was in the worst romance slump I have ever experienced, and THIS book was already in existence!! 🤡

🖤 🖤 🖤 🖤 🖤
It was everything I'd want from a story about fated mates, and I wouldn't change a thing about it. I wouldn'tt recommend reading it unless you've read or have gotten a summary of who the characters from the original series, The Reckless Damned, are. I don't think you have to know any major plot points, just who's mated or related to whom. I only read the first two books in that series and had no trouble keeping up with the numerous side relationships.

Will Matt and Dan Calley did a great job voicing Leo and Ferry. I was happy that the author went with new narrators for this series because I find it hard to listen to Joel Leslie for long periods of time, and I practically listened to this audiobook nonstop. I had such a great time, I can't help but have high expectations for the next story.

(3.5 si lo hubiera leído en el orden correcto).

ATENCIÓN: Esta novela es un Spin-off de la saga principal y no aparece señalado, así que aquí estoy yo advirtiendo.

“Come back to me, Leof. I’m waiting for you. Like I always have and always will”.

4/5⭐ 3/5🌶️ 3/5😱

Listen, this book fits right into my weak spot.
The one reserved for Paranormal romance with (fallen) angels, (Christian) God references, but most importantly Demon and Human bonds . And sons of Satan. Yummy.

Add into it that this is a M/M romance, and all the supernatural beings (of which there is a plethora in this book) are queer. Basically, there are shifters, vampires, demons, angels, mages.
The all have fated mates, and they are all hot. Of the 3 female characters, 1 is God (👌), one is a side character who we meet in passing once, and 1 plays a major role in the circumstances of the main couple but not necessarily a pivotal one in their relationship.

Ferenc, one of the original fallen angels, has a mate, Leof. Things happen, Leof dies, and Ferenc is charged with ferrying the souls of the dead over river Styx into Hell for eternity. Another angel, Eliza, throws them a life line (for what reason? unclear) and makes it so that Leof keeps reincarnating over and over again throughout millennia. Every time he dies, he reconnects with Ferenc and they spend 1 hour on the shores of Styx together. And then he dies. And Ferenc has to bury him. Over and over. 60+ times.

Until there is another uprising, a battle, and Ferenc finds himself topside (😸) in search of the modern day Leof. Here, now Ferry (again, 😸) finds the group of "supes" - all the variations of supernatural beings, consisting of a bunch of angels, sons of Satan, and their humans converging to a gay club called The Closet (😸😸), and recruits the help of this found family to get in Leo's good graces. Oh, plot twist - Leo does not remember him, nor any of his previous 68 lives, nor the fact that he is gay and has a fated mate, a fallen angel, or demon. In fact, he doesn't even know supernatural beings are a thing.

The plot, background and themes are amazing, i just thought they could be examined and executed a lot more thoroughly and deeply. I love the idea of Ferenc the Ferryman, but i needed more substance and worldbuilding in Hell, instead we are quickly transported to the modern times and follow the fated mates story where one remembers everything and the other one knows absolutely nothing about anything at all. If you are going to write about Hell and Satan's sons and Fallen Angels, you best bet that i will want to know how you handle that topic with all-encompassing precision, i want to know and understand EVERYTHING about it. I still don't quite understand why Eliza

(the angel who helped Ferenc and Leof - these names, can we talk about that real quick, are we just adding letters to ends of names and making them ancient that way, actually i will be using that for my own name, you can call me Elenar from now on, sounds great)

Did what she did to preserve their connection.

Also i am such a basic b* when i read, only half way i caught on that they were all British - you would think the British turns of the phrase would clue me in sooner, but no such luck.
The group dynamic reminded me a lot of Willow Dixon's Crimson Club series, so if you liked that and don't mind Paranormal romance - I highly recommend you get into this one!

I haven't read the Reckless Damned series by Lark Taylor so this is my first paranormal book by the author and I love love LOVE it so much! Full to the brim of pain and heartbreak, I was not ready to be hurt like that! I could not imagine having to do what Ferry did in order to be with Leo, waiting so long to be with him over and over again. I love a good story rooted deep in mythology with Ferry's fate ferrying dead souls over the river Styx for over 4000 years. Ferry and Leo are clearly meant to be and whilst their road to happy ever after is far from a fairy tale, the fact they continued to push through all obstacles and external factors to be together was so marvelous. Packed with a dose of angst and beautiful character development, I could not put this down for even a moment, and I cannot wait for the next book!

I wanted to try a new author to me for some reason. I’ve heard good thing but unfortunately, this author is not for me.
For 6 reasons….

1. the TWs were in their website and not IN THE ACTUAL BOOK 🙄🙄
2. The story started out so strong but completely lost steam at the end. Eliza seriously 🙄🙄🥱🥱
3. Too many side characters that I lost count.
4. Lots of side plots that made no sense.
5. Teasing that Ferry would top Leo then the 1st time happens off page until the epilogue. Epic eye roll 🙄
6. Conclusion: big meh 😑 plot

Needlessly to say I won’t be reading book 2 about Sebastian one of the least talked about characters in this book. Big meh and yawn.

Update: I didn’t know what to read and was in a bad mood, so when I saw that my library had the audiobook, I figured, why not? Bonus points for Will Watt being one of the narrators,I love his voice and could listen to him read a grocery list with that accent.

Still think it’s a good story, still cried after the prologue, and still don’t care about the books about Lucifer’s sons.

Nice, semi-original story with all good kinds of devastating happening

Audio: 4.5 stars, my first time listening to Dan Calley and Will M Watt, and they didn’t disappoint!

Book: 4 stars

Definitely can be read as a standalone!

I couldn’t tell you why this was addictive but I was thoroughly engrossed in this book. While I probably should have read the “Reckless Damned” series, you don’t need to if this book appeals to you.

Ferry and Leo were meant to be together. While rooting for them, they did feel a little surface level. Honestly it wasn’t too bad, there was just not a lot about Leo's past compared to what we were told from Ferry’s memories. I felt like Ferry was more fleshed out for that reason. Don’t get me wrong, I loved these two. They made me smile and I loved all the shenanigans that the other supernatural characters got up to!

I hope that Matty's book comes on Audio soon, but while I wait I'll pick up Lark Taylor's back list up!
