Product overview from 2007

StarForce Technologies (sometimes StarForce, Star Force, or StarForce Copy Protection System) is a trade name and family of copy protection products developed by Protection Technology, a company founded in 1998 in Russia with the intention of developing an innovative disc-based copy protection system. Within the PC gaming community they are most known for their disc-based copy protection originally released in 2000 and used in hundreds of games during the 2000s before the industry-wide adoption of digital distribution platforms. As of 2025 StarForce has operated for over 25 years within the gaming industry although as a result of controversy surrounding their disc-based copy protection, the popularization of digital distribution, and rise of competing digital solutions (e.g. SecuROM), its products saw a diminishing use within the PC gaming industry in the late 2000s.

History

• 1998: Protection Technology is founded in Russia with the stated intention of developing an innovative disc-based copy protection system.
• 2000: The disc-based copy protection system "StarForce" is released unto the market.
• 2000-2001: Two new products are released: CD-R Version intended to protect specially manufactured CD-R discs, and Soft Version which is an anti-tamper/anti-debugging protection intended for Windows executables. The disc-based protection is renamed to StarForce Professional as a consequence.
• 2002 June/July: Version 2.0 of the disc-based copy protection is released.
• 2002 October: Version 3.0 of the disc-based copy protection is released along with a cheaper Basic 1.0 edition intended for smaller games/projects (e.g. educational games for children).
• 2004 March: StarForce releases a new DRM product for online activation called ProActive.
• 2005 July: Version 3.5 of the disc-based copy protection is released bringing with it support for 64-bit games and applications.
• 2005 September: StarForce unveils the FrontLine product suite which combines many of their existing copy protection solutions into one umbrella product. The product features a tiered feature and pricing model: Basic, Pro, and Elite.
• 2005 November: Version 3.7 of the FrontLine product suite is released.
• 2005 December: Around the time that the Sony BMG copy protection rootkit scandal rocked the PC industry, rumors grew online claiming StarForce's disc-based copy protection caused optical disc drives to malfunction. As a result, StarForce started a contest where the winner who could prove these rumors would win $1000. They later increased the payout to $3000, then $5000, and finally $10,000. Once the contest had run for almost two months and received over 48,000 visitors but had zero applications, StarForce ended the contest as nobody could seemingly substantiate the claims of the hardware malfunctions.
• 2006 January: StarForce publishes a news article claiming that Mark Russinovich (who discovered the Sony BMG rootkit) had personally checked StarForce and verified it neither contained rootkits nor malwares.
• 2006 March: Version 4.0 of the FrontLine product suite is released.
• 2006 September: Version 4.5 of the FrontLine product suite is released.
• 2006 December: Version 4.7 of the FrontLine product suite is released.
• 2007 May: Version 5.0 of the FrontLine product suite is released.
• 2007 October/November: The various disc-based copy protection products are moved over to using the FL Disc brand, and a new product FrontLine Universal is announced that provides both digital and disc-based protection in one product.
• 2008 March: Version 5.5 of the FrontLine product suite is released.
• 2008 December: Version 5.6 of the FrontLine product suite is released.
• 2009 April: Version 5.7 of the FrontLine product suite is released.
• 2009 February: StarForce announces a new multiplayer anti-cheat solution for MMO games called StarForce MMOG.
• 2012 May/June: The FL Disc brand is changed to StarForce Disc.

StarForce Disc

StarForce Disc (known more commonly as StarForce) is the current name of StarForce's disc-based copy protection solution. The protection was primarily used in Russian releases of several games but occasionally saw universal use across all regions. Since its early inception the protection have relied upon a kernel-level driver to function. The use of a kernel-level driver along with some purported hardware and software issues made StarForce controversial to use and lead to a decline in its use due to user complaints. Over the years it was marketed and sold under various different names to align with the overall business strategy at the time:

• StarForce - Used originally when the disc-based copy protection was the sole product of the company.
• StarForce Professional (and later 2.0) - Used after the introduction of alternate products.
• StarForce Professional 3.0 and Basic 1.0 - With the release of StarForce Professional 3.0 in October, 2002 the company also released a more affordable disc-based copy protection called Basic 1.0 intended for educational software for children.
• FrontLine - In 2005 the company combined their various products under one suite called FrontLine, featuring three different tiers: Basic, Pro, and Elite.
• FL Disc - In late 2007 the company moved all of their disc-based protection solutions under the FL Disc umbrella, while still mostly retaining the tiering model from 2005.
• StarForce Disc - In May/June of 2012 the company replaced the FrontLine brand with StarForce in the product names, but otherwise retained the existing tiering model.

Some older StarForce versions are not supported on newer versions of Windows, or might require an update to function correctly; see the official support page for details and possible workarounds.

Keyless

Keyless, released in 2004, is a companion product to the disc-based copy protection. It provides an automatic and transparent disc-based activation technology that saw the serial number (CD-key) for the product be stored as digitized data on the game disk. This made the activation experience more transparent and seamless for consumers as they did not have to manually enter a serial key to activate the game when it was launched the first time.

This is an attempt to summarize the various versions of the disc-based copy protection and which Windows versions they are compatible with. Note that this section might be inaccurate at some places due to conflicting or unclear official communications.

• Windows 95: Supported from version 1.0 up until 3.6.x. Support was officially dropped in version 3.7.
• Windows NT 4.0, 98, and ME: Supported from version 1.0 up until 3.7.13. It is unclear if support was dropped in version 3.7.13 or if it was dropped in an earlier version.
• Windows Vista: Versions between 3.4.62 and 4.0 requires a driver update. Version 4.0.13 and newer natively supports the operating system.
• Windows 7: Versions between 3.7.18 and 5.60.2.4 requires a driver update. Version 5.70 and newer natively supports the operating system.
• Windows 8: Versions between 4.5 and 5.60.2.4 requires a driver update. Version 5.70 and newer natively supports the operating system.
• Windows 8.1: Versions between 4.5 and 5.70.14 requires a driver update. Versions between 5.70.14.1 and 5.70.21.4 requires a Windows update (KB2930157). Version 5.70.46.4 and newer natively supports the operating system.
• Windows 10, 11: Versions between 4.5 and 5.70.37.2 requires a driver update. Newer versions natively supports the operating system.

StarForce MMOG

StarForce MMOG is an anti-cheat, anti-botting, and anti-modding solution for massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) released in 2009. It protects games against various forms of reverse engineering, modding, and manipulation, as well as provides protection against games being played through virtual machines.

StarForce ProActive

StarForce ProActive is an internet-based DRM product that relied upon a one-time activation upon the first launch of a game. It was developed and released on March 15, 2004 in response of the growing use of digital distribution channels and alternate monetization models such as try & buy, try & die, trial, subscription, and more. The product could also be used in combination with the regular disc-based copy protection to further strengthen the protection of a game as well as enforce activation limits on the consumer for the protected product, sometimes necessitating manual deactivation to allow for the license to be transferred to another system.

The activation was generally performed automatically through the internet but could also be performed manually through an activation web site or even offline (by phone, by fax, etc). Developers could configure the product to run in either silent mode or regular mode. The difference between the two modes was that the regular mode required the insertion of a serial key to perform the activation.
